The objective of the project was to develop a dynamical simulation tool for transport planners of Latvia’s Vidzeme planning region (VPR) in order to provide an opportunity to discover possibilities of the region’s inhabitants to receive state/municipality and other services by using public transport. RTU ITI as a contractor was tasked with the development of a simulation system of the public transport, development of a model of the existing public transport system and evaluation of optimization possibilities of the public transport system. The developed system had the following characteristics:
- Interactive multi-modal simulation of regional and intercity bus and train traffic.
- GIS based infrastructure for spatial data processing and analysis.
- Two simulation execution time modes (configurable) - academic year and school summer holidays.
- 7 days simulation cycle (configurable).
- Vector map layers-based model consisting of roads, railways, settlements, administrative borders and public transport stops.
- Configurable and scale-free displaying of map layers.
- Selection of routes and trips to be simulated.
- Searching of vehicle trips between stops (within one route or with transferring).
- Depiction of simulation parameters in the information panel.
- Vehicle traffic visualization with scalable simulation speed-up.
